The City of Margate (pop. 58,329) is located in beautiful southeastern Florida only 7.5 miles west of the Atlantic Ocean. The City is widely recognized for its exceptional home-town quality of life, delivery of excellent municipal services, and numerous recognitions and awards. The City has a Commission-Manager form of government, with a five-member Commission elected “at large” to four-year terms. Margate is a full-service city with approximately 580 employees and an FY 2020 total budget of $161 million, which includes a $71.6 million General Fund budget. The City is seeking candidates for the Director of the Department of Environmental and Engineering Services (DEES) position which is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the City’s utilities division (water and wastewater systems), engineering division, and the solid waste and recycling program. The City owns and operates a 20-million gallon per day (mgd) water treatment plant and two separate and adjacently located treatment facilities, which have a combined permitted capacity of 10.1 million gallons per day (mgd). The water and wastewater treatment systems serve approximately 65,000 customers which include all residents and businesses located within the City’s geographical boundary, as well as a portion of the City of Coconut Creek. The Engineering Division is responsible for design review, permitting, construction inspection of site development activities; managing the City’s Utility Capital Improvement Program (CIP), the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES), and the City’s Geographical Information System (GIS); coordinating the City’s participation in the National Flood Insurance Program; and developing and implementing the Environmental Sustainability programs.
Requirements include a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, or closely related field, supplemented by a minimum of seven (7) years of progressively responsible work experience in the field, the majority of which should be in an administrative/supervisory capacity. Must be registered as a professional engineer (P.E.) in the state of Florida or be able to obtain registration within six (6) months of employment. A Master’s degree in Engineering, Public Administration, or Business Management is preferred. The salary range is $112,081-$157,251; starting salary is dependent upon qualifications.
