Direct management of technical staff relating to Plastic Engineering, including equipment/tooling associated with design and processing of plastic components, as designed by the director of Operations. Allocated resources based upon tactical plans & budgets. Responsible for hire / fire decisions. Submits tactical budgets, performance / productivity targets and reports on results. Measured against expectations and performance plan goals.
Prior experience and qualifications desired:
Previous work experience:At least 10 years of broad technical plastics processing experience, of which at least 5 years should directly involve Engineering relating to the injection molding of plastic components. At least 2 years demonstrated management responsibility.
Special Skills: Three to five years’ experience in managing technical personnel and complex activities within the Plastic Engineering and Plastic Processing industry. At least 5 years of demonstrated ability to design and oversee the manufacture of complex injection molding tools (molds) and related processing equipment. At least 2 years’ experience in devolving scientific molding processes. Expertise in high volume plastic processing is desired. Prior working knowledge of the requirements for the design and manufacturing of the medical device of equivalently regulated industry is desired.

Duties & Responsibilities The following statements describe the principal functions of this job and its scope of responsibility but should not be considered an all-inclusive listing of work requirements. Individuals may perform other duties assigned, including working in other functional areas to cover absences or relief of equalize peak work periods or otherwise to balance the workload.
1. Responsible for managing and directly participating in the technical aspects of plastic injection molding processing, within the IMI Quality Management System, including the following:
1.1 Maintain injection molding tools and equipment in a required state of readiness as defined by DO / Sr. Management to meet the requirements of Manufacturing, Product Engineering, Quality Engineering, Quality Assurance and Regulatory. 1.2 Develop optimized and robust injection molding processes to meet requirements defined by DO / Sr. Management to meet requirements of Manufacturing, Product Engineering, Quality Engineering and Quality Assurance and Regulatory 1.3 Design for manufacturability of injection molded components as part of Product Development Team and continuous improvement project as part of Manufacturing 1.4 Design, documentation, purchase (according to purchasing control procedures), fabrication, qualification/validation, optimization, maintenance and repair of injection molding tools and related processing equipment 1.5 Development, selection, acquisition (according to purchasing control procedures), installation, calibration, qualification/validation, maintenance and repair of injection molding processing equipment, accessory equipment and accessory instrumentation. 1.6 Develop, recommend, optimize, acquire (according to purchasing control procedures) and participate in the installation and maintenance of facilities and infrastructure necessary to achieve required state of readiness and optimization of injection molding processes 1.7 Establish practices and procedures for a safe and clean injection molding environment applying “5 S” principles as appropriate 2. Responsible directly and through subordinate supervisors or managers for: 2.1 recommend, recruit, hire, terminate, “right size” review, motivate and schedule technical staff to achieve departmental goals within guidelines and budgets established in conjunction with DO/Sr. Management 2.2 The measurement, management and reporting of employee staffing, training and employee performance consistent with company needs 2.3 Recommending, developing and executing approved employee appreciation/motivation/incentive programs for staff 3. Act as Project Leader or Subject Matter Expert for Plastic Engineering activities (as part of a team to include manufacturing, other engineering disciplines, quality assurance and other subject matter experts as required) to include: 3.1 Documentation, investigation and resolution of defects and non-conformances with root cause related to component or process design 3.2 Investigation and resolution of productivity variations including, tooling, equipment and processes 3.3 Improvement / optimization of product, process, staff expertise/skills, equipment, facilities within the scope of products/process in development or otherwise requested by DO/Sr management 3.4 Establish and maintain procedures, including manufacturing and quality systems documents and forms where applicable, for high standards in injection molding and other plastic processing operations and efficiency. Procedures are based on real company needs, consistent with regulatory and customer requirements.
3.5 Evaluate, develop, direct, maintain and where necessary directly apply techniques for the measurement and achievement of key departmental metrics (example: machine up time, cycle time, component cost, actual vs. BOM material usage, scrap due to process failure, etc.). Reports operations metrics to DO/Sr Management.
3.6 Lead team and directly participate in applicable plastic processing activities including ultrasonic, vacuum thermo-forming and other process as required as subject matter expert for Plastics (Materials) Engineering 3.7 Enforce directly and through subordinate supervisors and managers the procedures for high standards conforming to industry best practices 4. Promote companywide quality improvements efforts, culture of compliance and professional organizational behavior 5. Act as a liaison with external parties on matters relating to the procurement of services and materials for the company’s products as required and in coordination with DO/Sr. Management as necessary 6. Apply technical and process improvement tools: PFMEA, Process Mapping, Pareto Charts, Capability Studies, Design of Experiments, Fail Safeing, In Process Verification, etc. as required 7) Must lead by example and motivate others to accomplish activities within a cross functional group.
