Come join one of the City's award-winning teams! The current vacancy for the Plant Operator II is at our Southwest Treatment Plant (SWTP), located at the confluence of Wilson's Creek and South Creek. The plant is designed to produce an effluent which can be discharged into Wilson's Creek without having any negative environmental impact on the river water quality. As a Plant Operator II, you will perform duties in the capacity of a skilled operator in the operation of pure oxygen and air activated sludge plants.
The current work shift for this vacancy is 2:30 pm - 2:30 am, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and every other Wednesday.
Performs tasks relating to the operation of pure oxygen and air activated sludge plants and performs routine maintenance of plant equipment.
Controls sewage, sludge, air and gas flows, dissolution of pure oxygen, pumping rates and schedules, etc., necessary for the efficient operation of an activated sludge wastewater treatment plant; makes proper adjustments to valves, dials, etc. as necessary.
Makes visual observations of the treatment processes and equipment and reports observations to the Plant Shift Supervisor as necessary.
Drives dump trucks for hauling of biosolids, grit and screenings.
Reads, understands, and interprets a variety of information such as dial readings, log books, technical plant operations manuals, etc.
Monitors operation of equipment and treatment processes and makes appropriate entries in the shift logbook.
Utilizes appropriate tools as necessary such as wrenches, t-bars, grease gun, dipper ladder, etc. to adjust valves, obtain samples, etc.
Collects samples as necessary.
Drives to work sites both within and outside the plant facilities.
Maintains a neat and orderly work area.
Performs duties of lower graded positions as required.
Performs related work as required.
Principles, methods, and techniques involved in wastewater treatment;
Basic math as it relates to calculating volumes.
Perform operational and routine maintenance duties required to operate a pure oxygen and air activated sludge plant;
Makes necessary adjustments to assigned treatment plant processes;
Maintain accurate plant records and logs;
Observe and accurately interpret gauges, readings, etc.;
Follow oral and written instructions;
Communicate effectively verbally;
Effectively welcome and embrace differences among employees and citizens;

Experience, Education, and Training
Two years of college or vo-tech training in wastewater technology, chemical or biological sciences or a related area;
Degree in biology, environmental science, or similar area;
Two years experience in the operation of an activated sludge wastewater treatment plant, or in a closely related area;
Directly related work experience may be substituted for the education requirement on a year-for-year basis, and double credit may be given for direct City of Springfield Plant Operator Trainee experience.
Must possess a valid Missouri Class "D" Wastewater Operator's Certificate or equivalent; a Class "C" Wastewater Operator's Certificate is desirable;
Must obtain and maintain a Class "B" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with appropriate endorsements within the following guidelines: Pass written portion of exam within 90 days of employment and skills test portion within the probationary period.

Street Operations maintains 1,935 miles of city street, 575 miles of sidewalks, 64 miles of on-street bike routes, and 35,500 traffic signs.
